A meme briefly became popular lamenting the fact that the current US debates could not be like the Lincoln/Douglas debates.

There was not any group/commission overseeing debates then.  That began in 1987.

Both Lincoln and Douglas disparaged each others character.

Douglas, a Democrat, was defending enslaving blacks.  Lincoln, a Republican, was not.

Both participants had supporters in the audience that laughed, clapped, or dissented during the debates.

The debates were an agreement between Lincoln and Douglas.

Today, we have an organization that is partisan, meaning for one side (Democrat), and they are trying to dictate the format, substance, and participant conduct.
